Three Definitive Tests
THE BACK TEST
Flip the carpet. Handmade: pattern visible on back, identical to front, individual knots discernible. Machine-made: backing obscures pattern or shows uniform mechanical construction.
THE FRINGE TEST
Examine the fringe. Handmade: fringe is extension of the carpet's foundation warp threads. Machine-made: fringe sewn on separately after production.
THE DOCUMENTATION TEST
Request provenance. Authentic handmade carpets include: artisan name, village of origin, knot count certification, completion timeline. No documentation? Not handmade.
